PETALING JAYA (July 3): Around 20,000 Malaysians living illegally in the United Kingdom (UK) are being hunted by the authorities so that they can be prosecuted and deported.
Majority of them stayed on illegally in UK after their visas have expired or they abused their visas, according to Berita Harianreport today, quoting a source.
The source stated that many of them decided to stay on because of the attractive pay or business opportunities there.
Malaysian High Commissioner to UK Datuk Seri Zakaria Sulong said the High Commission does not have the exact number of illegal Malaysians living in the British Isles.
“The British Immigration laws are quite strict and does not compromise on this issue even though they do welcome Malaysian tourists, students and businessmen who enter and exit the country legally.
“I hope Malaysian citizens will follow British laws and not abuse their visa. If they do have a problem, we are willing to assist them, but please don’t stay here illegally,” Zakaria reportedly said.
However, he did admit that he does not know whether the topic will be discussed during the four- eye meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his British counterpart David Cameron tomorrow.
